The ring-type USM mechanism is composed of a rotor and a stator – an elastic body with a piezo-electric ceramic voltage element attached to it. By applying an A/C current with a resonant frequency, around 30,000Hz to the stator, vibrations are created causing the rotor to rotate continuously. 30,000Hz is in the ultrasonic range, and this is where the USM motors derive their name.

Micro USM

While the Ring-type USM is designed to fit in the circular barrel of a lens, another type of USM - the Micro USM motor was created to fit in a wide range of lenses without being restricted to the size of the lens barrel.  With a micro USM motor, the rotor, stator and drive gear are combined into one unit roughly half the weight of a ring-type USM motor.

Nano USM

Nano USM is Canon's latest innovation in focusing technology. Announced in early 2016 it combines the speed of Ring-type USM with the quietness and smoothness of STM. The features of this type of motor make it ideally suited for capturing fast action and movies where quiet and smooth focus are the ideal characteristics for focus.

Inside the Nano USM unit is an elastic metal body, ceramic voltage element and drive unit. The application and adjustment of voltage to the ceramic element, controls the direction and speed of the drive unit. The result is a focusing system that gives you a smooth focus with fine speed control.

EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

This was the first of Canon's lenses to contain Nano USM, and is especially useful when smooth focus is a must for natural looking focus transitions. Nano USM gives superb control, allowing for smooth tracking, while focusing on your subject as it moves away or towards the camera.

Direct Drive Motors

If the lens you're considering doesn't have a 'USM' or 'STM' in its name it is likely to use a more conventional DC, or direct drive motor, that provides auto focus but doesn't have the same benefits of high speed, smoothness and silence of either STM or USM technologies.
