FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RF 7-14MM F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM

  • Fisheye lenses bring a distinctive, memorable look to images and videos of expansive scenes, and create dramatic distortions when used at close range. The versatile RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM lens can be used for a wide variety of subjects, including action sports, astrophotography, epic landscapes and stylised portraits.

  • A fisheye zoom lens gives you the flexibility to create different fisheye effects without changing lenses. When using the RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM on a full-frame camera, you can capture a circular fisheye image at 7mm, or a frame-filing full-frame fisheye image at 14mm.

  • A circular fisheye lens captures a round image in the centre of the frame with black borders around it, while a full-frame fisheye lens fills the entire image area from corner to corner.

  • Fisheye lenses and ultra-wide lenses both capture very wide fields of view, but fisheye lenses introduce intentional heavy distortion for a more creative look. A fisheye lens also usually has a shorter focal length and pulls more of a scene into the frame compared to an ultra-wide lens.

  • Yes, you can use the RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM on Canon EOS R System cameras with APS-C or full-frame sensors. On APS-C, the maximum wide angle can be set to approx. 8.7mm to capture frame-filling 180° fisheye images. On a full-frame camera, the RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM lets you capture both 190° circular fisheye shots and 180° full-frame fisheye shots that fill the entire image area.

  • Yes, but to see the entire circular fisheye image, you will need a full-frame camera that supports Open Gate video recording. Note that some video codecs/frame rates may be restricted in this mode for some cameras.

Related Accessories

  • Drop-in Variable ND filter A

Using the external dial, adjust the filter intensity from ND2.5 to ND500 for greater control over exposure – ideal for both stills and when shooting videos.
  • Drop-in Circular Polarising filter A

Using the external dial, adjusts the filter intensity, boosting colour, contrast and saturation, while also controlling unwanted reflections.

Related Products

  1. 180° diagonal fisheye photography is possible on EOS R System cameras with APS-C sensors when the ‘C’ mark on the zoom ring is aligned with the C index (at approximately 8.7mm). The location of the zoom limit/lock switch at wide-angle does not guarantee a diagonal fisheye image for APS-C size
  2. Although the lens features dust- and water-resistant construction, this cannot completely prevent dust or water droplets from entering the lens. Lenses with dust/moisture resistance are fitted with a rubber ring on the lens mount which may cause slight abrasion of the camera mount. This in no way effects either the lens or camera performance.
  3. To record circular fisheye videos that can also be remapped into the equirectangular projection by Canon’s EOS VR Utility for 2D 180° VR viewing, you will need a compatible camera that supports Open Gate video recording.
